Cause for Gala Night

Medical hope for Depression

Depression is often associated with a psychological disorder or a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be debilitating to life. However, new medical literature suggests there may be an inflammatory biological component that is a cause of depression.

Here at Macquarie Stem Cells, over the past 10 years we have focused our treatment and research around osteoarthritis. We have treated patients with many different comorbidities that has shown improvements. One of the most striking cases for us is when we observe patient’s physiological behaviour patterns changing. Significant examples include improvements in patient’s anxiety and depression patterns. Too many of us have been impacted by a relative or friend suffering from depression, depression that often carries the risk of suicide.

It is important to remember, there are many different factors that lead to depression. It is not a one-way answer. Especially in relation to medical research, our focus is on a specific type of biological depression that involves inflammation of the brain. This is referred to as “inflammatory depression”.

Evidence in new literature suggests inflammation may surround the limbic system of the brain. Our limbic system controls basic emotions, instinct and mood. When the limbic system is inflamed, we have an imbalance of moods, that may lead to anxiety and depression.

Macquarie Stem Cells goal is to identify a biomarker via simple blood test that diagnoses brain inflammation. We aim to find the specific part of the limbic system that is inflamed. Once we have a clear diagnosis, we aim to treat a series of 10 patients with their own cells to resolve the inflammation around the brain and repair the area of damage. Thus, allowing mood regulation to return to normal.

This is ground breaking new research, if we can diagnose and cure inflammatory depression we can reduce the number of suicide cases, not just in Australia, but all around the world.
